Twenty-two Dental Trade Alliance members attended the July 31-Aug. 1 Mini-Dental School® East at the University of Maryland, School of Dentistry in Baltimore. There they gained unique insights into dentistry in one of DTA’s most anticipated events.

“A fabulous course that gives insight to the industry and dental education system that you can’t get anywhere else,” said DentalEZ’s Eric Reno. “You’ll get a condensed perspective of a variety of operatory challenges and how students are equipped to handle real world cases once they graduate.”

The hands-on sessions allowed participants to learn first hand techniques for caries removal and filling, digital radiology, intraoral scanning and CAD CAM, dental hygiene procedures and performing an endodontic root canal procedure. Attendees also heard from dental students on their views about the dental profession and their future plans.

“I have a renewed appreciation for the professionals we serve,” said NDC’s Jackie Jones. “The classroom overviews were presented very systematically, providing a complete overview of dentistry. The hands-on workshops brought it to reality! I’m fortunate to have had this learning opportunity.”

Key takeaways from the session  were:

  1. An inside view of the skills and training that dentist need to have to excel at their profession.
  2. A better understanding of the dental education system and how dental students are trained including what products and techniques are used.
  3. An improved grasp of the language of dentistry and of the varied specialties within the dental profession that use their products and services.

“For the non-dental practitioner, the University of Maryland Mini-Dental School® is a great introduction to many of the key materials, processes and trends in dentistry,” said Benco’s Wendy K. Miller. “The instructors were knowledgeable and encouraged interactive and hands-on sessions. It’s a great way to learn and I loved the inclusion of CAD/CAM in the curriculum. It was also a wonderful opportunity to network with other dental industry colleagues. I will definitely recommend it.”

Based on the continued demand for the DTA Mini-Dental School® program, dates for the 2018 sessions have already been confirmed. Mini-Dental School® West will be held April 16-17 at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine and Mini-Dental School® East will be held July 30-31 at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.
